Chelsea are through to the FA cup final after a win against Spurs. The 5-1 scoreline was rather flattering; Spurs forgot how to defend as they searched for an equaliser.
The Italian interim manager continues to enjoy that winning feeling. From 12 games since taking over the helm from the now forgotten AVB, he’s won nine games, drawn two and lost only one.
Is there a case for him to take the hot seat on a permanent basis next season?
Why not. Chelsea look like a different beast under his ‘leadership’ than they did under AVB. Whether people think the captain JT controls the team or not, they’re winning games. AVB was rumoured to have been set the task of getting the old guard out of Stamford Bridge. But it still looks like they still have much to offer.
Chelsea’s season has turned on its head in a short two and a half months. Many had written their season off as they spiralled down the table. But now: they have a realistic chance of getting their hands on the FA cup; they’re in the Champions League semi final and could snatch that last Champions League spot.
Heck, even Torres has come out of hibernation, something AVB couldn’t do. Clever man management? What has Di Matteo said to him? Because he’s starting to show signs of the Fernando defenders were scared of.
It’s no secret Roman Abramovic dreams of Chelsea being crowned kings of Europe. So Di Matteo’s fate may rest on how he performs against Barcelona, and then on the finals should they get that far. It has to be said, Chelsea are the weakest side remaining in the competition. But stranger things have happened and it would be quite a fairytale.
Whatever happens to Di Matteo, whether he gets the job or not, he’s done his reputation no harm.
